A fantastic and wide-ranging interview - thanks! On the subject of Jolyon Maugham, two of his three daughters are now transgender - what are the odds on that, I wonder? The oldest one has adopted the name Grin and has been involved in various transgender protests including the attempt to derail the 2024 London conference of the LGB Alliance by releasing live insects during one of the meetings. She participated in this Revolutionary Socialism in the 21st Century interview: https://archive.is/BwMg3

What a rebel - having grown up in her family's £4m modernist windmill!

Would anyone have a link to the play he mentions based on the Mermaids trial? Thanks!

“There is no legal protection for holding an understanding of fact.”

It’s a revelation to me as someone who has not studied law to learn that the law protects beliefs NOT based in fact more than it protects understandings of fact (unless, as you note, those understandings of fact are “demoted” to beliefs). Learning this makes me wonder if the legal minds that introduced “gender identity” into law deliberately leveraged this odd aspect of the law.
